Poisonous period products? UK charity detects pesticides in tampons

The Pesticide Action Network UK has found a pesticide in tampons at levels 40 times higher than permitted in drinking water. Researchers tested 15 boxes of tampons from UK shops and supermarkets for traces of pesticides and found that one box contained glyphosate. The report — published by the Pesticide Action Network UK in collaboration with Women’s Environmental Network (WEN) and the Pesticide Collaboration — evaluated the products for the presence of aminomethylphosphonic acid, one of the primary degradation products of glyphosate.

Origin by Ocean has partnered with CABB Group to turn invasive brown algae, which is currently causing an environmental disaster, into sustainable cosmetic ingredients. The companies will open a biorefinery in Kokkola, Finland, to address the need for ecological alternatives in the cosmetics industry as it transitions away from fossil-based ingredients. Origin by Ocean will start operations in 2028 and use its patented biorefinery technology to process Sargassum into ingredients such as biomass residue, fucoidan, and alginate.  
Nigeria plans QR code strategy to combat counterfeit cosmetics

Nigeria’s Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) will develop a digital platform to tackle the issue of counterfeit cosmetics. The platform will use QR codes to verify that products are real and trace movements throughout the supply chain.  The development comes as Nigeria faces a significant problem with counterfeit goods. Fake personal care products are unregulated and often contain harmful chemicals, posing health risks to consumers. Counterfeit beauty products can also create an economic threat to authentic manufacturers and beauty companies.

Amcor equips Bulldog with lightweight tubes for face wash

Amcor has supplied skin care brand Bulldog with lightweight and post-consumer recycled (PCR) flexible tubes for its face wash. The move is expected to save approximately 8.5 metric tons of plastic annually. Amcor says it has reduced the tube sleeve’s wall thickness by 16.67%. The reduction applies to Bulldog’s 50 mm diameter flexible tubes in 100 mL and 150 mL sizes, which are used for various products. “This latest iteration of the 100 mL and 150 mL flexible tubes is proof of both Bulldog’s and Amcor’s commitment to a circular society where more sustainable consumption and recycling are the norm,” says Amcor’s sales director, Joe Horton.

“Insidious” skin care: Young girls exposed to harmful beauty advice on TikTok

A study has found that tweens and teenage girls following beauty advice on TikTok may harm their skin by being encouraged to adopt intensive routines meant for adults. The results show that girls aged seven to 18 use, on average, six skin care products and have a routine exceeding 10 minutes, using products mainly created for mature skin.  The study revealed that videos on TikTok, often titled “Get ready with me,” frequently use digitally trending products that may come at a “high cost.” Apart from being expensive, these products can cause irritation, allergic reactions, and enforce social pressures regarding beauty and race.
